A native of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Utley began her coaching career as a high school assistant at Mid-Prairie High School (1997–2002), followed by an assistant stint at the University of Northern Iowa (2002–2007). She then served as head coach at Cedar Falls High School (2008–2010) and Waterloo West High School (2011–2012). In 2012 she was inducted into the Fort Dodge High School Softball Hall of Fame.

As a player, Utley competed at the University of Iowa. In her senior year (1999) she served as team captain and was named team MVP and Third Team All-Big Ten. She ranked in the top three in program history for career home runs, appeared in two College World Series (1996, 1997), and earned Big Ten Academic All-American honors in 1997.
